Buying process of semi-automatic firearms in Colorado is changing
Effective August 1, 2026
Colorado’s new law will change the process for purchasing many semi-automatic firearms in our state. Beginning August 1, for anyone purchasing certain semiautomatic rifles, or other firearms that accept detachable magazines, you will first have to complete a new state-mandated process before purchasing.
That process is expected to include:
- Booking an appointment to apply for approval from your local sheriff
- Completing a 2-day (12-hours total) in-person firearms safety course
- Passing a test at the end of the course
- Completing a state background check and waiting period
- While final details are still being finalized by the state, early estimates suggest the required training and administrative steps could cost $400 – $500 dollars at a minimum, plus hours of your time before you can complete your purchase.
THE GOOD NEWS
These new requirements do not apply to firearms purchased before August 1, 2026.
That means right now is the simplest and most affordable time for our law-abiding Coloradans to purchase the semi-automatic rifle they’ve had their eyes on.
